I’m gonna talk about stuff no one’s going to listen to okay so here we go.
That gif-set of the SNL sketch with The Obama’s as The Cosby’s? Where the dude commenting “thinking it was real” - yeah that .. that’s why I wish .. like, more people realized the magnitude of the internet?
Like, this kid is claiming it was a joke (which, I’m inclined to agree because he has a bunch of other posts which would lead me to believe he has a sense of humour/is not a complete moron).
But that damn gif set has more that 30,000 notes. That is, if we don’t include people who reblogged it before he said something and those who still haven’t seen that post/caption - tens of thousands of people have seen that. No, scratch that - even more, because there’s people who haven’t reblogged/liked it but saw it and assuming all those people had at least 100 followers and about 20,000 people saw that little blurb and it still had the caption under it .. then that’s … 2 million people. And even if we dial that down to 10,000 people have seen it .. then using the same math we get 1 million, even if we go all the way down to 1,000 then that’s 100,000 people.
And this kid, who made a joke or a stupid one off comment is getting anonymous hate to kill himself. He seems pretty “okay” about it as far as things go (I mean, he has a pretty good sense of humour about it and seems to be just annoyed by the sheer volume of people who are telling him that it’s a sketch on SNL over and over and over and over).
But yeah, he’s getting insulted and threatened and slurs thrown at him, more than one person has told him to kill himself.
And this happens because people don’t know when to stop and people don’t realize how much stuff like that can affect another person.
Same thing happens when someone makes a mistake in a private message to someone with a lot of followers and then gets embarrassed in front of however many people.
That kid and others like him may either be ignorant (which I usually err on the side of doubt because of my wanting to believe in the better of people, etc) or trying to joke about something but then when whatever it is gets around .. the results can be even worse than the initial ignorance.
Those people can learn what they need to learn (and should learn what they need to learn), but I’ve never gotten the point of insulting them to try and make a point - it’s one thing if they attack you personally or refuse to educate themselves but it’s another animal all together when they make one dumb and ill conceived comment and suddenly get people claiming they shouldn’t even be alive.
So uh, here’s another post about how I’m sensitive to this shit and stuff I guess.
